Japanese Tea Gardens
San Antonio, Texas is a city full of colors, traditions, culture, and adventures, offering its visitors a variety of unique places to make your stay in this state unique and unforgettable. From the time you arrive, you will find different ways to have fun alone or as a family, one of the tourist attractions that you have to visit when you are in Antonio, is the Japanese Tea Gardens, it is a hidden gem that will make you enjoy a little of Japan without leaving Texas.
This place was built in 1917 and the prisoners of the local prison were used to do the work, initially, it would be a pond of water lilies but then it was determined that it would be an area to create a Japanese tea garden, hence its name derives. This garden is one of the oldest of its kind in the entire United States, having almost 100 years since its inauguration.
Within the garden were built trails, islands, bridges and a Japanese pagoda, also filled the place with exotic plants and flowers to beautify it, these plants were donated by the same people of the municipality.
A respite from the city
The design, Japanese cultural influence, and vegetation that makeup it has made it one of the quietest corners of San Antonio, making those looking to get away from the noises of the city in search of calm. Rock sculptures, waterfalls, Japanese structures, and gardens are part of the carefully planned design, which has made more people who consider it the perfect place to get a break out of the suburbs over the years.
Location and when to go
The Japanese Tea Garden is located at 3853 N St Mary’s St, San Antonio, TX 78212, United States. This place is open every day of the year, from 07:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., your ticket is completely free and everyone regardless of their age will be able to enter, in fact, you can take your pet as long as it has its leash.
There is no specific time when you should visit this park, but if we had to choose we would recommend during the spring that the landscape is greener or in autumn that the colors that makeup it is more vibrant. However, keep in mind that during the summer is when the greatest influx of visitors there is and I may not be as calm as usual.
A perfect place for your wedding
Inside the garden, you can find wonderful places to hold events such as weddings or photoshoots, remember that you must book them in advance.
One of the options is an incredible waterfall that is designed to be able to perform weddings, has a small platform located in the middle of the bamboos so that the waterfall can be left as a background image. Please note that there are no more than 10 people in this place, neither chair nor tables can be placed and that wheelchairs are not accessible. Your reservation is only for one hour.
Another option is the Pavilion, it is a large area decorated with beautiful columns and with a beautiful view made up of lily ponds. In this place can be a maximum of 50 people and is possible to access with wheelchairs, making it perfect for a wedding, vow renewal or any other celebration.
